Did You Know...

REC - Instructional Classes

York offers instructional classes in active living, aquatics, dance, martial arts and racquet sports. Fitness and wellness classes are also available in boot camp, cardio tae boxing, core conditioning, hi-lo, movement with weights and circuits.

REC - Clubs

There are more than 20 student run sport clubs offering recreation and competitive programming. Some clubs may compete at the OUA championships, in alternate interuniversity leagues and at some community, national and international competitions.

REC - Intramurals

York’s intramurals program is one of the biggest in the country, offering more than 40 leagues, tournaments and special events throughout the year. Over 8,000 students participated in the intramurals program last year.

REC - Torch

Stong College has won more York Torch titles than any other college (27). The York Torch is the coveted championship for which all colleges are vying in intramurals. Teams receive points for participation and champions in teach division.

Bob Bain

Bob Bain was the longest tenured head coach in York history. He led the men’s basketball team for 38 seasons, winning more than 700 games, six OUA titles and two CIS bronze medals, as well as two CIS coach of the year awards and nine from the OUA.

Paul Jones

Toronto Raptors play-by-play man Paul Jones is a York graduate and a former member of the men’s basketball team. He won three OUAA titles and two CIAU bronze medals, and was a two-time OUAA all-star and the OUA championship MVP in 1981.

Field Hockey

The OUA field hockey coach of the year award is named after Dr. Marina van der Merwe, the former head coach of the York field hockey team. She led the program for 28 seasons (1971-99), winning eight CIAU medals and seven OUA titles.

Tennis

The OUA men’s tennis trophy is one of the oldest in sport (1909). York has won it eight times overall and three times in the last 10 years, the second-highest championship total in the last decade. The most recent conference title came in 2009.

REC - Fitness Centre

The Tait McKenzie Fitness Centre is 11,000 square feet in size and has 57 cardio machines, 23 selectorized machines and a selection of free weights.

2012 Grey Cup

Three members of the 2012 Grey Cup-winning Toronto Argonauts previously played at York. Defensive end Ricky Foley, who was named the championship game’s most outstanding Canadian, was joined by Andre Durie and Jeff Johnson.

REC - Facilities

York’s facilities include the Tait McKenzie Centre (4 gymnasia, 5 studios, 6 squash courts, 25-metre pool, fitness centre), Canlan Ice Sports (6 ice pads), Toronto Track & Field Centre, plus 9 tennis courts, 5 playing fields, 4 softball fields and a cricket pitch.

Dan Church

Women’s hockey head coach Dan Church is also the head coach of the Canadian women’s senior national team. He won the world championship gold medal in 2012 and will be at the helm of the squad for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Gymnastics

York’s gymnastics team is the University’s most decorated program. The men's and women's teams combined for 56 total championships (36 conference, 20 national) between 1969 and 1992.

Sue Wise

The OUA women’s track and field coach of the year award is named after Sue Wise, the former head coach of the York track and field team. She served in the role from 1986-99 and was the first full-time female track and field head coach in the CIS.

Steve MacLean

Olympic gymnast and Canadian astronaut Steve MacLean is a York graduate and former member of the gymnastics team. He won the OUAA and CIAU team championship five times each and became president of the Canadian Space Agency.

Women's Volleyball

The York women’s volleyball team has won more OUA championships than any other program in league history, with 15. They won six in a row from 1990-95 and 13 of 16 between 1982 and 1995. The most recent conference title came in 2009.
