The men’s hockey team plays its final game of the season tonight as the Lions have already been eliminated from the playoffs, sitting six points back with just one game remaining. Their last contest comes on home ice against Guelph, who they defeated 3-1 three weeks ago, and where they’ve had the most success this season. Seven of the Lions’ nine victories have come at Canlan Ice Sports and they are 4-1 in their last five games at home. Although they’ve had more struggles on the road, the squad is coming off a strong trip to Thunder Bay last weekend in which the Lions earned three of a possible four points against the third-place Lakehead Thunderwolves. The Lions won the first game 4-2 after building a 4-0 lead early and held a two-goal advantage in the second before giving up the lead and ultimately falling in overtime by a 7-6 score.

The women’s volleyball team got its swagger back this weekend with solid victories over Queen’s and RMC, including a dominating straight-sets win over the rival Gaels that moved the Lions to within one win of the division title. At 13-4, the Lions sit atop the OUA East standings, two points ahead of Ottawa and with a game in hand. They have already clinched a playoff spot and can earn home court advantage for the first round of the playoffs with one win in their final two games this weekend or a loss by the Gee-Gees to the Gaels. The Lions will be in Waterloo this weekend to face Laurier and Waterloo, two teams they haven’t faced since early last season. Both the Golden Hawks and Warriors have already been eliminated from post-season contention in the West division.

The men’s basketball team has slipped to fifth in the OUA East standings but still has a strong chance at finishing in the top four with three games remaining on the schedule, all against the bottom three teams in the division in Queen’s, RMC and Laurentian. The Lions are chasing Ryerson, which has to play the top three teams down the stretch, and sits just two points back. The Lions are coming off a tough weekend against Ottawa and No. 1 nationally-ranked Carleton in which they were defeated in both games. They will need to capitalize on their opportunity this weekend against the Gaels and Paladins, who are a combined 3-35 this season, if they want to earn home court advantage for the first round of the playoffs, and can lock up a playoff spot with one win or a Queen’s loss down the stretch.

The women’s basketball team is finished its challenging stretch of eight straight games against the OUA East division’s top four teams and will hit the road this weekend for contests against Queen’s and RMC in Kingston. The Lions knocked off the Paladins earlier this season but suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Gaels that same weekend, and will be looking for a pair of wins as they hope to secure a playoff spot for the first time in three seasons. They are currently fifth in the division, the highest they can finish regardless of results in their final three games, and can clinch a spot with two wins or a win and a loss by either Queen’s or Laurentian this weekend.

The men’s volleyball team plays its final games of the 2010-11 season this weekend on the road in Waterloo, first against Laurier on Friday night and then against the Warriors on Saturday. The Lions defeated the RMC Paladins 3-1 last weekend for their fifth win of the season, surpassing their win total from last year. With 10 points, the Lions are tied for ninth in the OUA standings with the Toronto Varsity Blues and both squads are four points back of the final playoff spot with just two games to play. Laurier currently holds down the final berth and Ryerson is just behind in the standings, meaning the last weekend of play with feature a number of crucial match-ups in the race to the finish.

The women’s hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to cross-town rival Toronto last Saturday to be officially eliminated from the playoffs. Heading into the final weekend of action this season, the Lions will finish seventh in the OUA standings regardless of results as they are six points behind Toronto and seven ahead of UOIT. On the schedule this weekend are trips to Oshawa and Kingston to face UOIT and Queen’s, respectively. The Lions have shut out the Ridgebacks in both previous meetings this season, winning 3-0 and 2-0, and split the first two games with the Gaels, taking a 4-3 decision in overtime but falling 6-2 later in the year.
Swimming
This Week: At OUA Championships (hosted by University of
Guelph)
The swimming team will be in Guelph this weekend to participate in the OUA championships. The men have finished eighth at each of the last two events and are looking to move up this season, while the women did not field a team last year but will have athletes competing this season. Medals are on the line in each of the events, as well as berths at the CIS championships, which will take place in two weeks at the University of Calgary.
Track and Field
Last Week: Hosted York Open
This Week: At Windsor Team Challenge
The track and field team competed at its home meet last weekend at the York Open and again put up multiple solid results. The Lions won five gold medals, three of which were taken by sprinter Dontae Richards-Kwok in the 60m, 300m and 4 x 400m relay. Cynthia Appiah and Ryan Charlton also reached the top of the podium in the shot put and 600m, respectively. The team will be on the road again this weekend to participate in the Windsor Team Challenge with just two weeks remaining before the OUA championships. The Lions will host that event at the Toronto Track and Field Centre Feb. 25-26.
