PENA, THOMAS-REYNOLDS NAMED ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Soccer player Adrian Pena and rugby player Tiera Thomas-Reynolds were named York’s male and female athletes of the week, respectively, for the week of Oct. 3.

Pena, a fourth-year forward from Woodbridge, Ont., scored a hat trick on Saturday to lead the Lions to a 4-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors.

He scored the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute and in the second half he single-handedly took control of the game. He scored his second of the game in the 57th minute on a beautiful chip shot over the head of the goalkeeper and in the 64th minute he completed the hat trick on a great individual effort that saw him break into the Warriors’ zone all alone, chip a pass to himself around the charging goalkeeper and bury the shot into the open cage.

Pena now has 10 goals in nine games this season to tie for the league lead.

With the win, the Lions (6-0-3) remain unbeaten in the OUA this season and the three points earned vaulted them back into first place in the OUA West standings with 21 points. Their other game of the weekend, against the UOIT Ridgebacks on Sunday, was postponed and a make-up date has yet to be announced.

Thomas-Reynolds, a fifth-year winger from Scarborough, Ont., scored two tries on Friday night in the Lions’ 17-12 loss to the Trent Excalibur in Peterborough.

Down 17-0 to the Excalibur in the second half, Thomas-Reynolds turned up her game and scored both of her team’s tries in the final 15 minutes to get the Lions back into the game, contributing 10 of the team’s 12 points in the contest.

The two-time OUA all-star now has four tries and 20 points on the season, putting her in a tie for 11th place on the OUA scoring list.

The men’s soccer team plays a game this Friday (Oct. 7) against the McMaster Marauders on the road in Hamilton at 8:15pm and will travel to St. Catharines on Sunday (Oct. 9) to face the Brock Badgers at 3:15pm. Meanwhile, the women’s rugby team will be at home on Friday night for its final regular-season game. They will be in for a challenge against the No. 2 nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons at the rugby field, beginning at 7pm.
