WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS WEEK – JAN. 31

HOME GAMES

Women’s Basketball: York vs. Laurentian
Friday, Feb. 3 @ 6pm
Webcast: SSN Canada

The women’s basketball team will look to snap its losing skid with a game against the Laurentian Lady Vees this weekend, a team they beat in convincing fashion – by a score of 70-45 – earlier this year. Despite a difficult couple of weeks for the Lions, they are settled into the sixth spot in the OUA East, six points ahead of the Lady Vees in the race for the final playoff berth in the division.

Men’s Basketball: York vs. Laurentian
Friday, Feb. 3 @ 8pm

The last time the men’s basketball team was on home court two weeks ago they recorded a huge 14-point upset of the Toronto Varsity Blues and they will be going for a similar result on Friday against a surprising Laurentian squad that is fourth in the division at 8-9. The Lions are unlikely to catch Toronto in the OUA East standings as the Varsity Blues have an eight-point advantage, but the Lions are comfortably sixth and will make the post-season if they can hold onto that spot. The Voyageurs defeated the Lions 95-75 in their other meeting earlier this year.

Track and Field: York Open at Toronto Track and Field Centre
Saturday, Feb. 4 @ 9am

Special event: Graduating Players

The track and field team is coming off a tremendous weekend in Montreal, where the men won their division and the women finished fourth in the team standings at the McGill Team Challenge. Several student-athletes from the squad have already qualified for the upcoming OUA and CIS championships, while others are still reaching for the qualifying standards. The Lions will be in action at the York Open at home this weekend for the final time before hosting the OUA championships the final weekend in February at the Toronto Track and Field Centre.

Women’s Hockey: York vs. Guelph and Brock
Saturday, Feb. 4 @ 2pm and Sunday, Feb. 5 @ 2pm
Webcast: SSN Canada

The women’s hockey team had a strong weekend in Waterloo, Ont., with a 4-0 trouncing of the Waterloo Warriors and a narrow 5-3 loss to the No. 1 nationally-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks. The win moved the team into a three-way tie for third place in the OUA standings (with Toronto and Queen’s) and all teams have just four games remaining on the schedule. The Lions will play out the rest of the regular season on home ice, beginning this weekend with games against Guelph and Brock. The Gryphons are firmly entrenched in second place in the standings while the Badgers are currently on the outside of the playoff picture in seventh place, but are just four points behind the Lions.
