ACADEMIC SERVICES

At York we understand that academic and financial support are significant keys to success at the University level and we have a number of programs in place to provide all the support necessary for student-athletes to thrive.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE PROGRAM

Sport & Recreation has placed the highest priority on supporting its student-athletes in all facets of university life, focusing specifically on helping to foster success in the classroom.

The Academic Excellence Program provides tutoring across multiple subjects for all students, mentoring from senior student-athletes that are in the same stream of study, academic advising through our academic services co-ordinator and many of our faculty, and access to our vast network of alumni.

The Academic Excellence Program is run under the direction of Bart Zemanek, the former starting quarterback of York's football team who was an academic all-Canadian and received multiple other academic and athletic awards in his years with the program. Zemanek graduated from York with a bachelor of arts and a Master's degrees in kinesiology, and is well-versed in all possible academic, financial and athletic circumstances that could arise at York.

NAVIGATING YOUR FIRST YEAR

All first-year student-athletes are matched with senior athlete mentors that will traverse the entire first year with the incoming student-athlete. Mentors will meet with their mentee once a week and will be a constant resource in all aspects of York life. First-year students will also undertake the "Passport to Success" program that focuses on skills crucial to success at the university level, including reading, writing, and time and stress management. All student-athletes are given a personalized, in-depth York-specific academic and athletic orientation over the course of their first year. At York, we pride ourselves on making sure no first-year students fall through the cracks.
