POLICIES

Sport York and the School of Kinesiology & Health Science strive to provide a high quality program for student-athletes and teams competing for York University.

GENERAL TRAVEL POLICY

  1. Sport York provides administrative and service support for each interuniversity sport.
  2. Sport York believes in fair and equal access to sport regardless of gender.
  3. Travel to competitions is normally by bus or van, depending on team size.
  4. Teams who require large amounts of equipment to be transported will travel in a coach for liability and safety reasons.
  5. When an event starts in the morning or afternoon and is more than 370 km away or more (one-way), teams will be permitted to travel the night before the event.
  6. In cases where the event starts in the evening and is 369 km away or less (one-way), teams will normally travel the day of the event.

    Travel distances (resource MapQuest 2005):
    Sudbury383 KM
    Ottawa450 KM
    Windsor381 KM

  7. All teams will travel home after the last game/event of the competition. Special consideration will be given to situations where an additional overnight stay may be permitted based on airline availability, safety and cost.
  8. All athletes must travel as a part of the team contingent.
  9. The head coach must approve individual exceptions and the student-athlete must sign a travel waiver form before travel takes place.
  10. Only members of the official travel contingent may travel with the team.
  11. The travel contingent for each team specifically outlines the number of student-athletes, student therapists, assistant coaches and head coach that may travel under university funding.
  12. When travelling, all teams must be under the supervision of the head coach or a non-participating designate whom Sport York has approved.

OUA AND CIS CHAMPIONSHIP TRAVEL

  1. Sport York will cover the travel costs for the official travel contingent (as delineated by York funded travel contingent) to OUA and CIS championship competitions.
  2. Sport York will not fund travel for injured athletes who are unable to compete. Exemption is at the discretion of the manager of interuniversity sport.

MEAL SUBSIDY POLICY

A meal subsidy of a maximum of $10 per day for a day trip and $20 for the preceding days that require overnight accommodation is provided to the team travel contingent (coaches, assistant coaches, managers, therapists and student-athletes) for competitions outside of the Greater Toronto Area.

  1. In a situation where a team meal is organized by the head coach (or designate) rather than distributing the meal subsidy funds to each individual, the coach will be required to provide receipts for these expenditures. The team captain will verify by signature the variation from the meal subsidy distribution policy. Original receipts must be submitted for all expenses.
  2. If the meal subsidy money is distributed, the coach must obtain the signature of each person to which funds have been dispensed and submit the completed meal subsidy distribution form with the travel report.

NON-CONFERENCE COMPETITION AND OUT-OF-PROVINCE FLIGHTS

As a principle, funding is normally only provided to CIS teams to:

  1. Prepare for league games/meets, provide an unique competitive experience, provide an appropriate level of competition not available in Ontario and enhance the opportunity of the team to return to the provincial and national championship.
  2. Engage in competition that will enhance recruiting and team development, in order to be competitive within the CIS.

ATHLETE TRAVEL POLICY

All athletes must travel as a part of the team contingent. Individual exceptions must be approved by the head coach and a travel waiver form must be signed by the student-athlete before travel takes place.
