Male Athlete of the Year: David McKay, Track & Field

McKay, a second-year pole vaulter from Victoria, was the best athlete in his event this season, winning both the OUA and CIS gold medals in just his second year as a varsity athlete. During the regular season he won four medals overall, including the gold at the McGill Team Challenge, and was ranked No. 1 in the CIS. He won the OUA championship for the second straight year to earn first-team all-star honours, and then saved his best for last with his first CIS title to earn a first-team all-Canadian selection. McKay’s 10 points at the CIS championships helped the Lions win the team bronze medal.

Also nominated for the award were Adrian Pena (soccer) and Ray Szeto (volleyball).

Female Athlete of the Year: Cynthia Appiah, Track & Field

Appiah, a fifth-year thrower from Toronto, won two OUA medals and one CIS medal in her final year with the Lions. After winning bronze medals in the weight throw and shot put at the OUA championships, she finished fourth in the weight throw at the national meet and then capped her season with a silver medal in the shot put. Appiah singlehandedly helped the Lions finish 12th at the CIS championships, contributing all 13 points in the team standings, and was named a CIS all-Canadian after the meet. During the regular season she established a new school record in the weight throw, was named the female athlete of the meet at the Windsor Team Challenge,  earned OUA and CIS athlete of the week awards in December and won a total of 16 medals in the two throwing events.

Also nominated for the award were Amber Barrett (rugby), Valerie Ushanova (tennis) and Brandie Wilkerson (volleyball).

For the week of Mar. 11

David McKay, Track & Field
David McKay won the gold medal in the pole vault at the CIS championships at the University of Alberta on Saturday afternoon. The second-year vaulter won with a height of 4.90 metres, which was five centimetres better than the silver medallist, and just shy of the personal best he set earlier this year. McKay, who is a two-time OUA gold medallist in the event as well, also earned CIS first-team all-Canadian honours and contributed 10 points to the team’s total, helping the Lions win the bronze medal.

Daniel Novia, Track & Field
Daniel Novia won the gold medal in the weight throw at the CIS championships at the University of Alberta on Friday afternoon. The third-year thrower dominated the competition, winning by more than one-and-a-half metres with a best distance of 20.22 metres. All six of his throws were better than any throw from the rest of the field. Novia, who was also the weight throw gold medallist last season, was named a CIS first-team all-Canadian for his efforts and contributed 10 points to the team’s total, helping the Lions win the bronze medal.

Cynthia Appiah, Track & Field
Cynthia Appiah won the silver medal in the shot put at the CIS championships at the University of Alberta on Friday night. The fifth-year thrower capped off her tremendous CIS career with her fifth national medal, coming up big in the final round of the competition to record a distance of 14.22 metres that put her in second place. Appiah, who earned her third CIS second-team all-Canadian honour, also finished fourth in the weight throw and scored all 13 points for the Lions women’s team, putting the squad in 12th place.

 

For the week of Feb. 25

Daniel Novia, Track & Field
Daniel Novia won the gold medal in the weight throw at the OUA championships with a season-best distance of 20.66 metres, which was just eight centimetres shy of the meet record he set in 2012. All five of his recorded throws were marked at 19.92 metres or better, and he won by more than two meters over the silver medallist. He also just missed out on a second medal, finishing fourth in the shot put with a distance of 15.97 metres. Novia, who is ranked No. 1 in the CIS in the weight throw and No. 5 in the shot put, also earned OUA first-team all-star honours for his win.

Michelle Pierce, Volleyball
Michelle Pierce was named York’s player of the match in the OUA gold-medal final after recording a game-high 23 points in a five-set loss to Ottawa that earned the Lions the silver medal. The fourth-year middle blocker had 13 kills on just 18 attack attempts, an impressive 61 per cent kill percentage, and also led all players with six blocks and four service aces. She was also stellar in a straight-sets semifinal win over Toronto, scoring 12 points on nine kills and three blocks. Pierce, who was also named an OUA first-team all-star for the first time earlier in the week, finished the regular season as the conference leader in blocks (64.5) and tied for seventh in scoring (3.7 points per set).

For the week of Feb. 18

Mehrdad Pourkamali, Wrestling
Mehrdad Pourkamali won the bronze medal in the 68kg division at the OUA championships in St. Catharines, Ont., on Saturday to help the Lions finish in sixth place. The second-year wrestler dominated the bronze-medal match against Guelph’s Brent Davies, winning the first round 6-0 and the second round 7-0 to finish in third place in his weight class. His result also earned him a spot at the CIS championships, representing the fist Lion to qualify for the national tournament since wrestling was last a varsity program at York more than 15 years ago. Pourkamali went 2-1 in round-robin action, with wins over McMaster’s Fady Georgis of the Lakehead’s Tyler Ashurst, to reach the bronze-medal bout.

Melissa Humana-Paredes, Volleyball
Melissa Humana-Paredes averaged 4.33 points and 4.0 digs in an OUA quarter-final match to lead the Lions to a straight-sets victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Saturday. The third-year outside hitter led all players with 11 kills and added one block and one service ace en route to 13 points, and she was also stellar on defence with 12 digs in the match. Humana-Paredes, an OUA all-star for the first time last year, finished seventh in the OUA with 3.71 digs per set and also had 2.97 points per set.

For the week of Feb. 11

Andrew Heaney, Track & Field
Andrew Heaney won the gold medal in the 1000m at the Windsor Team Challenge and broke a 15-year-old meet record. The second-year runner crossed the finish line in a time of 2:25.54 to eclipse the previous mark, which was set in1998, by more than one second (2:26.98). Heaney is now ranked sixth in the OUA in the event and has qualified for the OUA championships at the end of the month.

Tameran Defreitas, Track & Field
Tameran Defreitas won two gold medals and one bronze at the Windsor Team Challenge last weekend. The rookie sprinter ran a personal-best time of 7.74 seconds in the 60m to cross the finish line in first place. She also helped the Lions 4x400m relay team win the gold medal in a season-best time of 4:04.29, and she ran the team’s best split in the 4x200m relay (25.4 seconds) to help the Lions win the bronze medal. Defreitas’ time of 7.74 seconds now ranks her fourth in the OUA.

For the week of Feb. 4

Aaron Rados, Basketball
Aaron Rados tallied 38 points and 16 rebounds in two games this weekend to lead the Lions to a 1-1 record against Ryerson and Toronto. In a narrow four-point loss to the No. 7 nationally-ranked Rams, the fourth-year forward recorded a team-high 17 points and added six rebounds, two assists and one steal. The following night he was even more impressive, posting a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, including a 3-of-6 mark from behind the arc. Rados is averaging 11.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game this season.

Kayla Pangos, Basketball
Kayla Pangos sank nine three-pointers over two games as part of a 35-point, seven-rebound performance to lead the Lions to a 1-1 record against Ryerson and Toronto. In a 70-61 victory over the Rams on Friday night, the fourth-year guard netted 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including draining four threes on six attempts, and she added five rebounds and one assist. Her three-point shooting was even better the following night in a one-point loss to the Varsity Blues as she poured in a team-high 17 points on a sparkling 5-of-7 from behind the arc. She also added two rebounds and two assists. Pangos’ scoring average of 17.5 points per game this past weekend was well above the 7.1 average she has for the season, and her three-point shooting percentage of 69.2 was more than 30 percentage points higher than her season average.

For the week of Jan. 28

Paul Jakubiak, Volleyball
Paul Jakubiak recorded 75 assists in two matches, an average of 10.71 per set, to lead the Lions to a pair of victories over Windsor and Western this past weekend. The third-year setter tallied 32 assists and added a pair of digs in a dominating straight-sets win over the Lancers on Friday. The following night he was even more impressive, tallying 43 assists and adding three digs in a 3-1 upset victory over the favoured Mustangs. Jakubiak is averaging 10.25 assists per set this season to rank fourth among all OUA setters.

Kristie Wilson, Hockey
Kristie Wilson scored the winning goal in overtime to lead the Lions to a 5-4 upset victory over the No. 3 nationally-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks. With just under three minutes left in the extra period, the fifth-year forward received a pass in the neutral zone, skated through the defenders, and sniped the top corner just over the blocker of the Laurier goalie to give the Lions their biggest victory of the season and hand the Golden Hawks just their fourth loss of the season. Wilson is currently fourth in team scoring with nine points (three goals, six assists).

For the week of Jan. 21

Ray Szeto, Volleyball
Ray Szeto scored 39.5 points and added 15 digs to lead the Lions to a 1-1 record against Guelph and Waterloo this past weekend. In a 3-1 victory over the Gryphons on Friday night, the third-year outside hitter led all players in the match in points (21.5) and kills (18), scoring the rest of his points with three service aces and an assisted block while also adding five digs. The following night he finished with 18 points on 16 kills and two blocks and added a team-high 10 digs as the Lions nearly upset the No. 9 nationally-ranked Warriors before falling 18-16 in the fifth set. Szeto’s scoring average of 4.04 points is nearly one point more than last season, and he is one of only five players in the OUA with an average over four points.

Cyrielle Recoura, Basketball
Cyrielle Recoura scored 52 points and added 11 rebounds, seven assists and two steals to lead the Lions to a 1-1 record against Toronto and Ryerson this past weekend. In a huge 85-71 upset victory over the Varsity Blues on Friday night, the first-year guard led all players with 29 points and added five rebounds and five assists. She was also the game’s top scorer on Saturday against the Rams, scoring 23 points and adding six rebounds, two assists and two steals in a narrow 59-57 loss. Recoura’s strong offensive showing this past weekend moved her up to fourth in OUA scoring with 16.7 points per game.

For the week of Jan. 14 

Marko Dakic, Volleyball
Marko Dakic recorded 38.5 points and 16 digs over two matches to lead the Lions to a 1-1 record against Ryerson and Toronto this past weekend. The second-year outside hitter posted 15 points, including 11 kills, three service aces and one block, and added a team-high nine digs in a 3-1 win over the Rams on Friday night. The following day, he was even more impressive with match highs of 23.5 points and 20 kills in a five-set loss to the Varsity Blues. He also added two service aces, 1.5 blocks and seven digs. Dakic’s scoring average for the weekend was 4.27 points per set, more than three points higher than his season average of 1.81.

Brandie Wilkerson, Volleyball
Brandie Wilkerson scored 36.5 points and added 17 digs to lead the undefeated Lions to a pair of wins over Ryerson and Toronto last weekend. In a sweep of the Rams on Friday night, the third-year outside hitter led all players in the match in points (15.5), kills (12) and blocks (3.5) and also added nine digs. She was also impressive in a five-set win over the Varsity Blues on Saturday, posting match-highs of 21 points and 15 kills, and adding three blocks, three service aces and eight digs. Wilkerson, an OUA all-star and CIS all-Canadian last year, is ranked third in the OUA with 4.37 points per set.

For the week of Jan. 7

Tyler McGee, Hockey
York hockey player Tyler McGee scored three goals in two games, including both the tying and winning markers in an upset over No. 8 Windsor, to lead the Lions to a pair of victories in their 2013 openers. Against the Lancers, the second-year forward scored on a powerplay at 7:32 of the second period to tie the contest and then netted a gorgeous back-hand goal 6:19 into the third period to cap a furious comeback after the Lions fell behind by two goals to their nationally-ranked opponents. The previous night, he scored York’s second goal in a 4-3 shootout victory over the Waterloo Warriors. McGee is now third on the team in goals, with six, and the two wins for the Lions moved them up two places in the OUA West standings, into a tie for fourth place with the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

For the week of Dec. 3

Umar Khan, Track & Field
Umar Khan set a new school record in the shot put to win the gold medal at the Xmas Open on Saturday. The fourth-year thrower is the only student-athlete in York history to break the 17-metre mark, and he did so on four of his six attempts at the meet, setting the new record at 17.67 metres. His winning throw was more than two metres further than the rest of the competition.

Cynthia Appiah, Track & Field
Cynthia Appiah set a new school record in the weight throw to win the gold medal at the Xmas Open on Saturday. The fifth-year thrower broke the 18-metre mark for the first time with a distance of 18.43 metres on her final throw, which was nearly four metres further than the second-place athlete and 36 centimetres better than the previous best mark at York. Appiah also won the gold medal in the shot put at the meet with a throw of 13.95 metres, more than two metres better than the rest of the field.

For the week of Nov. 26

Michael Santini, Hockey
York hockey player Michael Santini scored three goals in two games, including a game winner, to lead the Lions to a pair of victories over Laurier and UOIT this past week. In a 5-1 triumph over the Golden Hawks on Thursday night, the rookie forward netted the winning goal on a power play late in the second period. He was even better on Saturday, notching two goals to give the Lions a commanding 4-1 lead they turned into a 5-1 win over the Ridgebacks. Santini is the team’s top rookie scorer with eight points (four goals, four assists) and is fourth overall in Lions scoring.

Melissa Humana-Paredes
York volleyball player Melissa Humana-Paredes tallied 14.5 points and a game-high 19 digs to help the Lions post a thrilling 3-2 victory over the previously undefeated Ottawa Gee-Gees on the road on Sunday. The third-year left side recorded 11 kills, two service aces and 1.5 blocks, including assisting on the block that set up match point in the fifth set. Her 19 digs were four more than any other player in the match, and she also added two assists. Humana-Paredes is currently third in the OUA with 4.29 digs per set for the unbeaten Lions, who are now the only team in the country with an unblemished record through the first half of the season.

For the week of Nov. 19

Nick Tufegdzich, Basketball
Nick Tufegdzich tallied 37 points, 14 rebounds and eight steals to help the Lions to a 1-1 record against Western and Windsor this past weekend. The third-year forward was the best player on the floor in an 81-62 victory over the Mustangs on Friday night, recording game highs in scoring (25 points), rebounding (10), steals (five) and blocks (two) and also adding two assists in just 28 minutes of action. The following night, he put up 12 points, four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and one assist in an 81-72 loss to the No. 5 nationally-ranked Lancers. Tufegdzich is the OUA leader with 10 steals on the season, and is also among the conference’s top 10 in in rebounding and blocks, ranking eighth with 7.2 rebounds per game and sixth with five total blocks

Cyrielle Recoura, Basketball
Cyrielle Recoura recorded 35 points and 12 rebounds in a pair of losses to Western and Windsor this past weekend. The rookie guard was the team’s best player on Friday night against the Mustangs, recording game-highs of 21 points, five steals and four assists, and adding a team-best eight rebounds as part of a 69-53 loss. The following night she led the Lions with 14 points and two steals, and also added four rebounds and one assist. Recoura is tied for 15th in OUA scoring with 12.8 points per game and is third in steals with 3.0 per game.

For the week of Nov. 12

David Tyndale, Basketball
York basketball player David Tyndale recorded 35 points in two games, including the winning point on Saturday night, to lead the Lions to a 1-1 record on opening weekend. The fifth-year guard nailed the winning free throw with 12 seconds left on the clock to give the Lions a 70-69 victory over the Brock Badgers, and for the game he tallied 13 points and a team-high three assists and two steals. In the season opener on Friday night, he tallied a game-high 22 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-9 from behind the arc, in just 21 minutes of action in a 77-58 loss to the McMaster Marauders. Tyndale is currently tied for eighth in the OUA with 17.5 points per game.

Michelle Pierce, Volleyball
York volleyball player Michelle Pierce tallied 28 points, an average of 4.67 per set, in a pair of straight-sets wins over Toronto and Ryerson this past weekend. Against the previously undefeated Rams on Sunday afternoon, the fourth-year middle blocker led all players with 15 points, four blocks and two service aces, and also tallied nine kills in the win. She was also impressive on Saturday afternoon, again leading all players with four blocks and adding eight kills and one service ace for a total of 13 points in a dominant 3-0 win over the Varsity Blues. Pierce is in the OUA’s top 10 in total blocks and points per set for the undefeated Lions.

For the week of Nov. 5

Andrew Perugini, Hockey
York hockey player Andrew Perugini made 63 saves on 67 shots to lead the Lions to a 1-1 record against McGill and Ottawa on the weekend. The fourth-year goaltender allowed just one goal to the defending OUA and CIS champion McGill Redmen in a 2-0 loss on Friday night in Montreal, making 25 saves on 26 shots. The following night in Ottawa, he helped the Lions to a 4-3 comeback victory over the Gee-Gees by making 38 saves on 41 shots and stopping all three Ottawa shooters in the shootout.

Megan Lee, Hockey
York hockey player Megan Lee made 52 saves on 54 shots and posted one shutout to lead the Lions to a pair of wins over Ryerson and Toronto this past weekend. In a 3-0 win over the Rams on Saturday afternoon, the second-year netminder turned away all 31 shots she faced for her first shutout of the season. The following day, she stopped 21 of 23 shots in a 3-2 upset victory over the No. 9 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues. Lee has spent more time between the pipes than all but one other goalie in the OUA this season, and is seventh in save percentage (.914) and ninth in goals against average (2.65).

For the week of Oct. 29

Jesse Messier, Hockey
York hockey player Jesse Messier tallied four points and the shootout winner to lead the Lions to a 5-4 victory over the Brock Badgers on Friday night. The fourth-year right winger won the game for the Lions in the third round of the shootout and scored two goals in regulation, a shorthanded marker 59 seconds into the second period and a power-play goal at 10:06 of the same frame, to give the Lions a 3-1 lead. He also recorded two assists on York’s other two goals in the game. Messier is the team leader in scoring with nine points (four goals, five assists) in six games, putting him in a tie for 11th in OUA scoring.

Brandie Wilkerson, Volleyball
York volleyball player Brandie Wilkerson averaged 5.33 points and 2.00 digs per set to lead the Lions to a pair of straight-sets wins over RMC and Queen’s this past weekend. On Friday night, the third-year outside hitter led all players in the game with 15 points, on 12 kills, two service aces and one block, and also added seven digs as the Lions swept the Paladins. She was even better the following night against the defending OUA champion Gaels, again leading all players with 17 points on 14 kills, two service aces and one block, and adding five digs. Wilkerson is currently fourth in OUA scoring with 4.38 points per set.

For the week of Oct. 22

Colm Vance, Soccer
Colm Vance made 12 saves in 135 minutes of action this past weekend as part of three wins for the Lions. In his first start of the season against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday afternoon, the second-year goalkeeper stopped all five shots he faced to lead the Lions to a 2-0 victory that capped an undefeated season for the squad. Earlier in the week, he was also perfect in the second half of a 7-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors, stopping all seven shots he faced. For the season, Vance stopped all 13 shots he faced.

Melissa Monkhouse, Volleyball
Melissa Monkhouse recorded 24.5 points and 16 digs in two matches this past weekend to lead the Lions to a 2-0 start with wins over Lakehead and McMaster. The second-year outside hitter was tremendous in her first career start on Friday night, posting a team-high 17 points on 11 kills, four service aces and two blocks, and also added four digs, in a 3-1 win over the Thunderwolves. The following night, she had 7.5 points on six kills, one service ace and an assisted block, as well as a team-high 12 digs, in a straight-sets win over the Marauders.

For the week of Oct. 15

Kyle Exume, Football
York football player Kyle Exume was named the player of the game at the 43rd annual Red & Blue Bowl after scoring three rushing touchdowns to lead the Lions to a 36-24 victory over the rival Toronto Varsity Blues. The fifth-year running back was all over the field throughout the game, tallying 132 yards rushing on 24 carries and 15 receiving yards on three catches, as well as one sack for an eight-yard loss and one solo tackle. His first two scores gave the Lions their first 14 points of the game, and his third major of the day came with just 1:07 left on the clock, securing the Argo Cup victory for the Lions after the Varsity Blues were threatening to take their first lead of the game. Exume is fourth in OUA rushing with 630 yards on the season, and is also fourth with seven touchdowns scored.

Nour Ghoneim, Soccer
York soccer player Nour Ghoneim scored six goals in two games, including the game-winners in both, to lead the Lions to a pair of shutout wins over UOIT and Brock last week. The rookie striker accounted for all of York’s scoring in a 2-0 victory over the Ridgebacks on the road on Wednesday night and led all players with four shots in the contest. She was even better at home against the Badgers on Sunday, tallying four goals on six shots, including a natural hat trick with the match’s first three scores in the 23rd, 25th and 58th minutes. She added her last in the 88th minute. Ghoneim has played in only seven games this season but is up to fifth in OUA scoring with nine goals.

For the week of Oct. 8

Ahmed Shebl, Tennis
York tennis player Ahmed Shebl won the singles gold medal at the OUA tennis championships in Oshawa on Sunday, leading the Lions to the team silver medal. Competing in the top flight, the fourth-year economics student won three straight three-set singles matches, including a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 semifinal victory over Waterloo’s Vincent Chan, who was the defending singles champion and the top seed in the first flight. Shebl eliminated Western’s Thomas Young 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the first round and claimed the gold medal with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Toronto’s Zain Manji in the final. He and doubles partner Lorent Kryeziu were also the runners-up in the doubles first flight.

Valerie Ushanova, Tennis
York tennis player Valerie Ushanova won the singles gold medal at the OUA tennis championships in Oshawa on Sunday, leading the Lions to a fourth-place finish in the team standings. She dominated in the final against Western’s Marni Venter, dropping only three games to win 6-2, 6-1, and also won her first-round match in straight sets, by a score of 6-2, 7-5 over Waterloo’s Alison Drainie. Ushanova’s big win came in the semifinals, where she rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat the first flight’s top seed, Toronto’s Aya Bara, by a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. Ushanova also advanced to the semifinals of the doubles first flight alongside Julia Kedrzycki.

For the week of Oct. 1

Sotiri Varlokostas, Soccer
Sotiri Varlokostas made nine saves and allowed one goal in two games this weekend to lead the Lions to a pair of wins over Western and Windsor. The fourth-year goalkeeper was stellar on Saturday afternoon, stopping all seven shots against a tough Western team to post his sixth shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory. One day later he made two saves and allowed one goal in a 3-1 triumph over the Lancers. Varlokostas has started all 10 games for the Lions and made 35 saves on the year (for an 88% save percentage) while helping the squad to a 9-0-1 mark and first place in the OUA West standings.

Amber Barrett, Rugby
Amber Barrett scored two tries to lead the Lions to a 23-12 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday afternoon. The third-year 8-man’s two scores gave her a game-high 10 points on the day and marked her second multi-try game of the season. Her first score came just before the half and helped the Lions regain the lead for the final time, and her second was the only score of the second half that secured the victory. She also made several tackles in the final 20 minutes of the game to prevent Toronto from scoring again. Barrett now has 25 points on the year, tying her for 15th place in the OUA, and the Lions are second in the OUA Russell Division standings with a 3-2 record.

For the week of Sept. 24

Adrian Pena, Soccer
Adrian Pena scored four goals, including a hat trick against Windsor, to lead the undefeated Lions to a win and a tie last weekend. The fifth-year forward scored all three goals in a narrow 3-2 victory over the Lancers on Sunday afternoon, including the game-winner in the 76th minute, as part of a six-shot effort on the day. He also scored the team’s lone goal in a 1-1 draw with the Western Mustangs on Friday night. Pena has a total of 10 goals in eight games this season, putting him second in the OUA scoring race.

Kelsi Smith, Tennis
Kelsi Smith went undefeated in six matches this weekend to lead the Lions to a 2-1 record in their three ties, with 5-2 wins over four-time defending OUA champion Montreal and Waterloo and a narrow 4-3 loss to Western. The third-year biology student went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles without dropping a set and gave up only 10 games in her three singles matches.

For the week of Sept. 17

Mark Anthony Kaye, Soccer
Mark Anthony Kaye scored four goals, including a hat trick against Guelph, to lead the undefeated Lions to three wins last week. The rookie midfielder scored all three goals in the first half in a 3-0 win over the Gryphons on Sunday afternoon and netted his first of the weekend the previous day in a 6-0 victory over the Brock Badgers on the road. He also recorded one shot on net in a 3-1 upset victory over the No. 4 McMaster Marauders on the road on Wednesday night. Kaye’s total of six goals scored this season is the best mark among all first-year players, and he is tied for second overall in OUA scoring.

Rita Keimakh, Soccer
Rita Keimakh scored two goals, added one assist and recorded a total of six shots on goal in three games last week as the Lions continued their undefeated season with a win and two draws. Both of her goals came in a 5-0 victory over the Brock Badgers on the road on Saturday afternoon. She also recorded one shot in a scoreless tie with the McMaster Marauders, also on the road, and assisted on York’s only goal in a 1-1 tie with Guelph, taking the corner kick that was headed in by teammate Taylor Lyons. Keimakh is the team’s leading scorer and is tied for seventh in the OUA with three goals.

Kyle Exume, Football
York running back Kyle Exume had the highest single-game rushing total in the CIS this season, accounting for 180 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the Lions’ 47-36 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday. His first score came on the first play of the second quarter, a six-yard run to make the score 21-14 for Ottawa. He tied the game five-and-a-half minutes later when he exploded through the line and up the sideline for an 85-yard touchdown, and he added his third early in the fourth on an eight-yard rush to cap a 12-play, 107-yard drive that gave the Lions a 40-28 lead. In total he contributed over 200 yards of offence, adding 25 receiving yards to his rushing total, and he also helped on special teams with two tackles.

Amber Barrett
York rugby player Amber Barrett scored three tries and accounted for 15 of the team’s 22 points in a season-opening loss to the Western Mustangs on Wednesday night. She scored all three of her tries in the second half to help the Lions battle against the Mustangs. Barrett, who was the team’s co-MVP last year and also the recipient of the ‘Hitman’ award, is currently tied for 11th in OUA scoring with 15 points.
