GOLDEN HAWKS TAKE DOWN LIONS IN WATERLOO

The York University Lions football team was defeated by the Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 68-14 on Saturday (Sept. 25) at University Stadium in Waterloo.

Starting quarterback Nick Coutu (St. Catharines, Ont.) only played in the first quarter before coming out of the game with an injury. Backup QB D.J. Frank (Richmond Hill, Ont.) played the rest of the contest, completing 15 of 40 passes for 138 yards and one touchdown. He also threw two interceptions.

Scoring the touchdown was Jonelle Tolbert (Mississauga, Ont.) on a 10-yard completion late in the first half. The score capped off a strong seven-play, 77-yard drive for the Lions, part of nine straight completions for Frank as he marched the team down the field and into the endzone.

Linebacker Steven Reading (Fenelon Falls, Ont.) was dominant on the defensive side of the ball for the Lions. He scored the team’s second touchdown of the game mid-way through the third quarter after picking off Laurier quarterback Dan Daigle and returning the ball 38 yards for the score. He also led all players in the game with 10.5 total tackles, including two for loss.

Patrick Russell (Brampton, Ont.) had another big game in recording eight tackles, the second-highest total of the day.

Laurier got on the board first with a touchdown just 1:48 into the game. The Golden Hawks continued their rapid scoring pace throughout the first half, scoring seven touchdowns, one field goal and two rouges before halftime to take a commanding 54-7 lead at the break.

The Lions outscored the Golden Hawks in the third quarter thanks to the touchdown, while Laurier managed just two York conceded safeties. The Golden Hawks added another field goal and a touchdown in the fourth to seal the win.

Golden Hawks’ starting quarterback Evan Pawliuk completed nine of 13 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns before Daigle took over. Daigle completed just four passes for 47 yards and threw two interceptions; the one picked off by Reading and another by Mike Boyd (Hamilton, Ont.), who returned it 24 yards.

With the win, the Golden Hawks improve to 2-2 on the season while the Lions fall to 0-4.

York returns home next weekend for the team’s homecoming game against the McMaster Marauders (3-2) on Saturday (Oct. 2) at York Stadium beginning at 1pm, while the Golden Hawks will welcome the Guelph Gryphons (3-1) to town on the same day.

NOTES: The Lions held Laurier’s Dillon Heap, the CIS record holder for most return yards in a season, to just 47 punt return yards and 12 kick-off return yards ... The Golden Hawks ran the ball well throughout the game, amassing 247 yards on 49 carries ... York’s offensive line allowed just one sack ... Announced attendance at the game was 803.
