2012 OUA FOOTBALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

The 2012 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) football season kicks off on Labour Day with all 10 teams in action across the province. The York University Lions will begin their season on the road in Kingston, Ont., against the Queen’s Gaels.

Their first home game is the following weekend, when the Lions will welcome the Ottawa Gee-Gees to York Stadium.

The highlight of the home schedule comes in Week 4, when the Lions will host the Waterloo Warriors in their annual Homecoming game. Last season’s contest against the Warriors was the year’s most exciting for the Lions, as they earned their first win under head coach Warren Craney on the road in Waterloo, Ont., in thrilling fashion, pulling off a 20-18 overtime victory after coming back from a 17-point half-time deficit.

Also coming to York Stadium next season are the defending Yates Cup and Vanier Cup champion McMaster Marauders in Week 6 and the Guelph Gryphons in Week 8.

The 43rd edition of the Red & Blue Bowl will be played in Week 7 at Varsity Centre, when the Lions travel downtown to face their rivals, the Toronto Varsity Blues. The game will be a rematch of last season’s nail-biter, which the Varsity Blues won 10-8 after kicking the winning field goal with less than one minute left on the clock.

Other road games include a Week 3 trip to Waterloo to face the Laurier Golden Hawks and a visit to Windsor, Ont., in Week 5 to face the Lancers.

The only team the Lions won’t face this season is the Western Mustangs.

The regular season will build to the much-anticipated playoffs following the conclusion of games in Week 8. The OUA quarter-finals are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 3 and the 105th Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Energy will take place at the home of the highest seeded team after the semis on Saturday, Nov. 10.
