LIONS END SEASON WITH LOSS TO GEE-GEES
The York University Lions men's basketball team ended its 2011-12 season with a 78-63 loss to the host Ottawa Gee-Gees in their OUA East quarter-final game at Montpetit Hall on Wednesday (Feb. 22).
The Gee-Gees, seeded third in the OUA East Division, outscored the sixth-seeded Lions in each of the first three quarters to build an insurmountable lead, and held the advantage until the final buzzer for the win. They led 43-27 at the half and extended that lead to 20 after three quarters.
Ottawa had three different players score in double digits in the contest, most notably second-year forward Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue (Gatineau, Que.), who finished with the games only double at 20 points and 14 rebounds, both game highs. Johnny Berhanemeskel (Ottawa) was just behind him with 18 points and five rebounds, while Christopher Anderson (Ottawa) finished with 11 points.
Leading the way for the Lions was fourth-year guard David Tyndale (Mississauga, Ont.), who had 13 points and six rebounds. Sophomore forwards Nick Tufegdzich (Tecumseh, Ont.) and Vlad Velici (Woodbridge, Ont.) each had nine points in the game and finished with eight and five rebounds, respectively.
With the loss the Lions saw their season come to an end, while the Gee-Gees have advanced to the OUA quarter-finals and will face off against the Ryerson Rams on Saturday (Feb. 25).
