WOMEN WIN, MEN DEFEATED IN SATURDAY DOUBLEHEADER
The York University Lions men’s and women’s soccer teams completed their three game road trip against the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Sept. 18). A great outing for the women’s team saw them capture their first win of the season in a hard-fought 1-0 game, while it was a tough outing for the men’s team, losing 2-1.
After rookie forward Sonia Sampogna (Toronto) posted the game’s only goal, York’s defence took control of the match.
York goal keeper Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.) played a great game and with the help of her defensive players, she was rewarded with a shutout, the ninth of her university career.
In the men’s game, the Warriors played very aggressive against the Lions. Midfielder Adam Craig and forward Sohyb Basir both notched goals in the win. However, Craig’s aggression would be noticed by the referees and was ejected from the game after receiving a red card.
Rookie defenseman Daniel Fabrizi (Brampton, Ont.) scored his first career goal, but it wasn’t enough as York picked up the loss.
Despite the loss, Lions striker Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) still holds onto second place in scoring in the OUA with three goals.
After the slow start, the women’s team is rising through the standings and are up to sixth in the OUA with a 1-2 record. Meanwhile, the men’s squad is holding onto a consistent fifth place with a 2-2 record.
Both teams will return home on Sunday (Sept. 19) to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks. The game represents the first at home for the women’s team, while the men began at home with a 7-0 victory over UOIT during opening weekend.
