LIONS SHUT OUT GOLDEN HAWKS 2-0
The York University Lions men’s soccer team proved to be too much for the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday (Sept. 19) in a 2-0 win at York Stadium.
The Lions showed an impressive level of dominance over their rivals. Just two minutes into the game, fifth-year defenceman and tam captain Jamaal Smith (Mississauga, Ont.) rang one in past Laurier goalkeeper Jarrett Humprheys (Waterloo, Ont.).
Following the early goal, the Golden Hawks pressed the ball forward with the pass in an attempt to even the score. The team earned multiple chances, including a shot that ripped off the upper post by a Laurier striker.
While Laurier put the pressure on for much of the first half, it was the Lions defence that proved to be the difference in this match-up. The Lions defenders began to do a better job at keeping the ball out of their zone and managed to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into the second half.
In the second half both teams ramped up the physical play, leading to three yellow cards being called. Despite two solid scoring chances coming on breakaways from York’s rookie starter Alon Badat (Richmond Hill, Ont.), the score remained unchanged until Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) found the net in the 52nd minute to seal the victory.
Following the decision, Lions assistant coach Mike Bianchi gave praise to the Golden Hawks tenacity, mentioning his team was “out-hustled and out-played in the first half.” However, he was quick to smile when noting the tenacity his team showed as they “dominated” the latter portion of the game with solid defensive prowess.
The Lions will look to continue their excellent play as they take on the Waterloo Warriors starting at 3:15pm this coming Wednesday (Sept. 22) at York Stadium.
