DOMINANT OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE LEADS TO VICTORY
It was a game about attacking hard and often for the York University Lions men’s soccer team, and that led to a dominant 5-0 victory over the host UOIT Ridgebacks in Oshawa on Friday night (Oct. 8).
The Lions knocked on the door early in the match, but had to wait until nearly half time to score their first goal. York striker Adrian Pena (Woodbridge, Ont.) broke the ice first, scoring his 10th goal of the season.
Starting the second half of the match, the Lions scored two quick goals in the first five minutes, with rookies Daniel Fabrizi (Brampton, Ont.) and Alon Badat (Thornhill, Ont.) netting one each. Midfielders Pedram Eynolhagh (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Ilya Orlov (Woodbridge, Ont.) rounded out the scoring for the Lions.
The Lions offence pounded on the Ridgeback goalies in the game, putting nine shots on tenders Andrew Thompson and Oliver Lietz. The defence also played a great game as keeper Luigi Caruso (Toronto) faced four shots, but held his ground.
Pena’s goal puts him in a tie for top goal scorer in the OUA.
With the win, the Lions stay second in the OUA standings with a 8-2-1 record with five games remaining. Next up is a game against the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 9). The men will be up second at 3:15pm, just before the women hit the pitch at 1pm.
