LIONS CLAIM OUA BRONZE WITH WIN OVER CARLETON
The York University Lions men's soccer team won the OUA bronze medal on Sunday (Nov. 6) with a 2-0 victory over the host Carleton Ravens at Keith Harris Stadium in Ottawa.
York and Carleton were forced to play in the third-place game after semifinal losses on Saturday to Toronto and McMaster, respectively.
Both teams chose to rest several starters after yesterday's hard-fought semifinal games. The early part of the contest was even as neither squad was able to take control of the game.
The Lions broke the deadlock in the 17th minute on a scramble in front of the net. Second-year midfielder Carlos Nogueira (Brampton, Ont.) was standing near the goal line when the ball came to him and he tapped it into the back while being knocked over to score the game's first goal.
The Lions pushed their lead to two in extra time of the first half, when a York forward was hauled down inside the box. Fifth-year defender Luigi Oliverio (Toronto), playing in the final CIS game of his career, was called upon to take the penalty kick and he calmly stepped up and drilled it right through the middle of the net for the goal, the first of his career.
The whistle blew just after that to end the first half, with the Lions holding a 2-0 lead.
Carleton had more scoring chances in the second half but could not capitalize, and York rookie goalkeeper Colm Vance (Bradford, Ont.), starting his first career game for the Lions, made a number of big plays in net to preserve the shutout.
The Lions' best chance for a goal in the second half came in injury time, with the game essentially already decided, but the shot rolled just wide while Carleton goalkeeper Simon Brown (Ottawa) was on the ground.
