TEAM TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS HIT REXALL THIS WEEKEND

The York University Lions tennis teams will take on squads from across the province this weekend (Nov. 11-13) at the team regional championships with a spot in the national championships next summer on the line.

Joining the Lions at Rexall Centre this weekend are the McGill Redmen / Martlets, McMaster Marauders, Montreal Carabins, Queen’s Gaels, Toronto Varsity Blues, Waterloo Warriors and Western Mustangs. Each squad is fielding a men’s team and a women’s team that will compete in separate draws toward the final on Sunday.

Action gets underway Friday morning at 8:30am, with York facing Waterloo and McMaster taking on Western, both as part of the women’s draw. First-round play will continue throughout the day in both draws, with the semifinals set for Saturday and the championship finals going off on Sunday.

Both Lions teams finished tied for first in their respective divisions in the regular season standings. The men went a perfect 6-0 to tie with the Western Mustangs, while the women ended the regular season at 6-1 along with the defending champion Montreal Carabins.

All teams at the event are looking to qualify for the national championships, which will take place at the Rogers Cup presented by National Bank next summer at the Rexall Centre in Toronto.
