WARRIORS TOP LIONS IN STRAIGHT SETS

The York University Lions men's volleyball team went down in straight sets to the Waterloo Warriors at the Physical Activities Complex in Waterloo, Ont., on Friday night (Feb. 3).

The Lions kept each set close and got better as the match went on, but they were not able to keep the Warriors at bay long enough to build any sort of significant lead. The Warriors ultimately pulled out the match 25-19, 25-18, 25-20.

Second-year outside hitters Ray Szeto (Sutton, Ont.) and Nikola Sandic (Etobicoke, Ont.) led all Lions with 11 points each, including 10 kills. Szeto also contributed three digs and two assisted blocks, while Sandic had two digs and a service ace.

Libero Daniel Dearing (Toronto) finished with a team-high seven digs, while setter Paul Jakubiak (Toronto) finished with 23 assists.

The best player on the floor on this night was Waterloo's Jordan Dyck (St. Catharines, Ont.), who led all players with 15 points, including seven kills and seven blocks. Erich Woolley (New Dundee, Ont.) had a game-high 12 digs and Scott Thomson (St. Mary's, Ont.) ended the night with 33 assists.

Despite the loss the Lions still remain close to clinching a playoff spot. With a 6-9 record and 12 points, the Lions are comfortably seventh in the OUA standings, six behind the sixth-place Guelph Gryphons and four ahead of the Toronto Varsity Blues.

They will get an opportunity to climb closer to the Gryphons on Saturday night (Feb. 4) when they take them on in Guelph beginning at 8pm. The Gryphons are coming off an upset loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday night.
