Wally Dyba’s remarkable run as head coach of the York men’s volleyball team continues in 2012-13 as he returns to the helm of the squad for his 36th season.

During his time with the Lions, Dyba has coached his team to seven OUA championships and has been named OUA East coach of the year six times. He has won 336 regular-season matches in his coaching career, the most of any men’s volleyball coach in the OUA.

Dyba has been involved with volleyball at several levels. He has coached numerous age groups and teams to provincial and national medals. A former provincial team coach, he has served as a guest coach with the Canadian national team on several occasions. Dyba was selected as head coach of the Canadian World University Games men’s beach volleyball teams in 2004.

A tenured professor in York’s School of Kinesiology & Health Science, Dyba has a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Western Ontario and has authored the book Incredible Volleyball.

Micheal Vitullo

Micheal Vitullo

Title: Assistant Coach

Michael Vitullo has been an assistant with the York men’s volleyball program for six seasons.

Before joining the coaching staff, Vitullo was an athlete with the York program. During his time as a player, Vitullo was an assistant captain on the 2004-05 men’s OUA championship team and was the recipient of several accolades, including the Volleyball Excellence Award (2003), three Volleyball Achievement awards (2002-04) and three York University Sport Excellence awards (2002-04).

An NCCP certified coach, he is also a provincial volleyball referee. Away from volleyball, Vitullo graduated from the Schulich School of Business.

Micheal Wahbi

Micheal Wahbi

Title: Assistant Coach

Michael Wahbi is now in his sixth season with the York Lions coaching staff. In addition to working as an assistant with the men’s volleyball program, he is also involved with the volleyball seminar program, both the coaching certificate clinic and the athlete development camp.

A York University graduate, Wahbi is a high school teacher at Bishop Allen Academy in Toronto.

Hernan Humana

Hernan Humana

Title: Assistant Coach

Hernan Humana, a three-time OUA East coach of the year award winner, returned to the men’s volleyball program four seasons ago for the first time since 1993-94, when he led the squad to an OUA East championship while Dyba was on sabbatical. He also spent 10 seasons as head coach of the Lions women’s team.

Humana returned as an assistant while his son, Felipe, is a member of the team and his daughter, Melissa, plays for the Lions women’s team.

The highlight of his coaching career came in 1996, when he led the Canadian Olympic beach volleyball tandem of John Child and Mark Heese to a bronze medal at the Atlanta Games, the first Olympic medal for Canada in the sport.

He is currently the director and head coach of the Elite Beach Volleyball Club, one of the most successful beach volleyball clubs in Canada.

A native of Chile, he received his Licenciatura degree (physical education) from the University of Chile prior to moving to Canada. Humana played 11 seasons with the Chilean national volleyball team and also coached the country’s juvenile national team. In Canada, his career continued at York, playing for men’s head coach Dyba in 1980-81. As a student, he completed two programs at York – an advanced coaching certificate and a master’s degree in sociology of sport.
