Bill Pangos has been the bench boss for the York women’s basketball program for 26 seasons.

In his previous 25 years, Pangos has led the squad to unchartered territory. The Lions qualified for two consecutive CIS national championships (2006 and 2007) for the first time in the program’s history. He guided the Lions to the team’s first OUA championship since 1982 in 2006-07 and earned his third consecutive OUA East coach of the year award that same year, making him a five-time winner of the honour.

Prior to the successful recent run, Pangos experienced his top feat at York when he led the team to a silver medal at the 1996-97 CIS national championship tournament.

In addition to his coaching duties, Pangos is a lecturer and sport administrator in the School of Kinesiology & Health Science. A former Ontario provincial team coach, Pangos is a master course conductor for Canada Basketball and a course conductor for the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

The Toronto native played high school basketball at North Toronto C.I. before moving on to the University of Toronto, where he graduated with a bachelor of arts in physical education. He also holds a master’s degree in physical education from the University of Western Ontario.

Ralph May

Title: Assistant Coach

Ralph May joined the York Lions coaching staff for the first time in 2009-10.

He brings a lot of technical and tactical expertise to the Lions, crucial elements to coaching the current young group of student-athletes that make up the squad.

A passionate and enthusiastic coach, May has been heavily involved in the Ontario Basketball MDP and JDP programs to help develop young talent in this province. He has also served as the head coach of the Barrie Royals club team. Away from the court, he is the principal at Pope John Paul II Catholic Elementary School in Barrie.

Laura Lennon

Laura Lennon

Title: Assistant Coach

Laura Lennon (nee MacCallum) joined the Lions as an assistant coach for the 2010-11 season after playing for the team for five years.

A former CIS and OUA rookie of the year award winner and a three-time OUA all-star, she graduated from the program two years ago as the team’s all-time leading scorer. As a player, she provided tremendous leadership and a competitive spirit, which helped York win the 2007 OUA championship and advance to two straight CIS championship tournaments.

In addition to coaching the Lions she is a coach for the Oakville Venom of Ontario Basketball’s junior elite league.
