LIONS BRING HOME DOUBLE VICTORY OVER BROCK
York University’s soccer teams left St. Catharines with a
pair of victories on Sunday (Oct.4) as the men blanked the Brock
Badgers 2-0 and the women took their match by a score of 3-1.
Men’s goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ont.) had the
shutout for York. It was his second in as many days.
Franco Ruscetta (Woodbridge, Ont.) and Philip Rivers (Woodbridge,
Ont.) scored in the second half for York as the Lions’
high-powered offence fired 20 shots on the Badger goal.
In women’s action, Samantha Gauthier (Laval, Que.) was the
star of the show. She potted a pair of goals in the first half,
while Nicole Markowitz (Toronto) added an insurance goal at 75:58
to put the game out of reach. Brock’s Ali Bettger made it
tight at the end of the first by cutting York’s lead in
half.
Goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.) allowed only the one
goal. After her shutout performance against McMaster on Saturday,
she has allowed only one goal in two games.
The Lions capped off what was a dominant weekend on the road, as
they blanked the McMaster Marauders by a pair of 2-0 scores on
Saturday (Oct.3) before topping Brock on Sunday.
It was a satisfying day for the Lions, as both teams earned a
measure of redemption. The Lions lost to Brock at their home
openers by identical scores of 1-0. After a 4-0 winning weekend for
both the men and women, the Lions seem to have righted the ship
after their disappointing season openers.
The men (4-2-2) now move into third in the OUA West standings, one
point behind Windsor and two behind leader Guelph. Brock has not
won since beating York in their first game.
The women are now tied for second in the West standings, having
drawn even with Brock for points with a 5-1-2 record. They sit
three behind top-ranked Laurier.
The Lions will visit Guelph to take on the Gryphons on Wednesday
(Oct.7), as the men look to take their share of the OUA West lead
and the women try to pull ahead of Brock.
